What is diplomatic immunity and how does one obtain it?

I heard something about Diplomatic Immunity and Diplomatic Passports. It sounds interesting, but I don't know what it is or how one obtains it's status.

you would either have to be a serving diplomat in that country or the spouse or child of someone who is. however, it would mean that you could not be charged or prosecuted for any civil or criminal matters in that country, unless your country specifically allowed it. if your country refused to allow it, the host country would demand that you leave, but that's the most that they could do, unless you came back later. if you no longer have immunity, then they could arrest you later with no problem at all.
