What is the U.S Foreign Service?

What is the US foreign service, and what exactly do they do. Please go into as much detail as possible.

In short, they are Diplomats. They staff and run embassies overseas, and work in foreign policy positions within the Department of State when in DC. I wouldn't say they are a "branch" of the Department of State, rather, just a type of employee within the Dept. There are Civil Service and Foreign Service career tracks. Civil Service works mainly in Washington, FS does both. FS operates more along a military-style promotion and rank system, while the CS is your classic government personnel system. (Not to knock CS, there are some incredibly knowledgeable experts and dedicated CS employees, crucial to US foreign policy.)

The US foreign service is a branch of the department of state of the US Federal Government. The most basic way to explain is that they run the embassies. There are a few different paths you can take as a foreign service officer. It is not easy to become one however.
