If you're a US citizen with a passport, just get on a plane and go. You don't need a visa.

i assume you ask about your situation with spanish wife...americans do not need any special visa to enter UE.you can only stay there for 3 months though.

if you are married and your wife is a spanish citizen they you can go to spain, however depending on your nationality there are certain issues that have to be tackled...
if you need a visa they cannot refuse to give it to you...
however there are different trashholds regards your residence, how lonf you've been living together and whether you 're going to spain on holiday or to set up your matirimonial home... these all give rise to different outcomes
