What is the difference between a temporary resident visa and a tourist visa?

Tourist visas - you are allowed to visit the country for pleasure (holidays). Your period of stay is determined by the immigration officer at the port of entry (which city in that country you are disembarking in). They will stamp your passport permitting the number of days you may stay in their country. You have to leave the country on the day the permit to stay expires.

Temporary resident visas - you are allowed to stay in the country to work, study or do both simultaneously. You can buy property, rent it out or live in it. You file taxes for your full time work and other income generated in that country. If you have stayed for a good length of time (but for small holiday breaks out of the country), you maybe granted a permanent residency visa (if you've met all requirements stated by the immigration department). It will allow you to stay in the country indefinitely and from their you work towards your citizenship.
