SEVIS (The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) is an internet-based system that allows schools and the USCIS to exchange data on the visa status of international students. Accurate and current information is transmitted electronically throughout an F-1 or J-1 student's academic career in the United States. US embassies and consulates also have access to SEVIS.

SEVIS is the acronym for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. Foreign nationals are assigned a SEVIS number when they are you are issued an I-20 by an accredited institution of learning in the United States. A SEVIS fee receipt and valid I-20 are required in order to apply for an F-1 visa for study in the United States; F-2's are linked to the F-1's SEVIS number.
