I would like to get a job somewhere overseas that allows me to live there for a few months, but also be able to come home fairly often.

Hi McFly -- If those are your criteria, then perhaps Foreign Service isn't for you. You don't get home all that often between the difficulty of getting time off and a maximum of a once per year employer-paid trip home (in Europe & Canada the gov't pays for no trips home).
Private business is likely more to your taste -- in my experience, the salary, benefits, and perks offered private employees FAR exceed those offered to Embassy workers (and, similarly, Embassy workers get better benefits than many NGO groups).

Well, US embassies employee people from all different trades and backgrounds. Some of the employees at US embassies are IT specialist, Visa officers, and even Janitors.
Your best bet though if you are wanting a job higher up on the pay scale or are wanting to advance in a career at a US embassy is to try an become a Foreign service officer.
The first step to become a Foreign Service Officer is to take the Foreign Service Test, which traditionally has been offered in April. |

Hopefully less.
We need to be closing Embasseys not opening more of them.
They have become outposts for immigration and "foreign aid" in third world countries.
As a Taxpayer I just don't want to pay for that stuff anymore.
I think the State Dept should be downsized drastically! |
