What kind of things are covered by diplomatic immunity?

I know a few people who are sons and daughters of international diplomats and while they have all been really nice down to earth people, they make note that there are lots of things that they can get away with in a legal sense. Most things that you and I could be arrested and charged for, they could not because of the immunity. I know that one of my friends was in a car wreck with a person who had diplomatic immunity and while they should have been charged for injuring some people, they simply wrote a check and walked away. I am curious to know what exactly is covered by that immunity - murder? manslaughter? assault? If anyone has REAL information on this I would love to know. Thanks!

It matters the level of immunity that you have, and that usually depends on your status (ie royalty -vs- diplomat -vs- head of state). Yes, there are some people with such a high level of diplomatic immunity that they could actually murder someone and the worse thing that our legal system could do would be to deport them. Which would be difficult as they can't even be detained.

the only people who get diplomatic immunity are those who are accredited, i.e. officially assigned, to work as diplomats in a given country, and their immediate family members who accompany them to that country. some diplomatic staffers get a limited immunity as well. diplomatic immunity is an agreement between the host country and the country sending the diplomat. in the case of the united states, if a diplomat or family member commits an egregious crime (e.g. rape, murder), the u.s. will usually wave the claim to diplomatic immunity and allow the host country to prosecute the individual according to its legal system.
