Ok , So im going to be a freshmen in september and i was wondering If i could do anything to better my chances in becoming a foriegn service agent ( i belive thats what there called? ) , like a diplomat. I took french level 1 , part one this year, and ill finish up level 1 part 2 next year, and then proably continue on to higher levels. Ill also be starting spanish level 1 part 1 next year. I thought that more languages would be a good starting point. Is there anything els that i could do? what are like good collages for this carrier ? I live in a very rural part of the country lol, I have one nieghbor, and alot of cows around me....So theres not alot of like big city oppurtunities for me, and advice would be appreicitaed though thanks. Ohh and my school doesent really offer any electives that i think would helpp my chances.

yea, sorry for the spelling... I'm really bad at it, and we never really focused on it in 8th grade, mabey we will this year ....haha oh well i should probably put more effort into learning it by myself .

Go to www.state.gov. They have numerous internship programs (though they are extremely competitive) and will give you information on how to apply for and take the civil service and foreign service exams. The more languages, the better off you are. They need more people with Middle Eastern and Asian languages for their hot jobs right now. |

First and foremost, learn how to spell. That is harder than it sounds, because you need a LOT OF HELP. If you're serious about the foreign service, get in touch with the United States Department of State and ASK them what requirements they have for entry level staff positions. Offer to be an unpaid intern during the summer, doing anything they need done. Don't try to learn two new languages at once, you have a hard enough time making yourself understood in English. Pick either French or Spanish, they are both good choices for the future. If you choose French, listen to French radio, watch French television and movies. Don't worry about understanding it all at first, the important thing is to learn and inculcate the SOUND of the language. Finally, TRAVEL! |
