I'm English and I'm taking a year out before University, starting this year. I want to try my luck at acting in the USA, going to auditions and all that. How would I go about that? I know most working visa's require you to actually have a job lined up, or a specialist subject (i.e. lawyer, doctor...). Is there any sort of visa that would work for me? I'm also planning on going to an acting academy in LA for an 8 week course which I will be applying for a student visa for.
Does anybody have any experienced views on this? (I'm 18 btw)

Just go and do your course. Apply for the student visa and see if you like it first.

I am a British Actor with a green card and work over there and back in the UK. I say go over on a student visa and if that is what you want to do, you will do it. Now go look at that site |

there isn't any visa that allows you to act professionally before you line up some part. so, the advice to just go and do your academy class is fine. If someone does decide to hire you, they'll need to file the paperwork with US immigration to make that happen. It's not something you can do on your own. Most professional folks in Tinseltown will know how to do that, but some don't. They would normally need to file a petition for a P visa, and once that was approved and you changed status, you'd be fine. If they really, really like you and want you immediately, they can pay an additional $1,000 for expedited processing which gets it done within 15 work days. |
