Where can I find information regarding dual citizenship?

As an American citizen, how can I obtain citizenship in another country?

Ex: Can this be done through marriage?

You are allowed by the US to retain US citizenship once you become a citizen of another country. Your new country however may not allow you to have dual citizenship & ask that you renounce your US citizenship, it depends on your new citizenship country & not on the USA as they are fine with it.

Your options are through marriage, most often there are residency requirements where you must live with your spose in the new country for a set amount of time before you obtain citizenship.

You could also look into you heritage & if you have ancestory that is not too far back you may be able to claim citizenship through them.

You can also move to other countries for work & try to obtain permanent residency & then citizenship that way too. All really depends on the country you are interested in.

trough marriage, you may in some countries after a period of time be able to be naturalized,
it depends on the country's laws on dual citizenship,
the US does allow dual citizenship, but all other countries do not;you would have to check on the particular country, you are talking about.
the other way to obtain dual citizenship? is to live a certain amount of time in another country, and acquiring the citizenship.

Depends on your parentage, marriage etc...Many countries allow people to become citizens through parents - Greece, Ireland, Korea....you need to research this with the individual countries embassies. Obviously it is complex and each country has different rules.

You generally do not have to renounce your US citizenship these days. When people do that it is generally for tax reasons. Even in the current political climate, it is seen as useful to have US citizenship.

To become a citizen in another country, generally, u have to renounce your American citizenship. Lets say you want to become a mexican citizen. You would be required to marry on the bridge, and walk across immediately after. You would have to reside in Mexico for 3 months, and then apply for your citizenship, at which time, you would be asked to renounce your american citizenship. I dont recommend it.
