As the previous person stated, J-1 is an exchange program visa, though not only for students. Some of the more well known programs are Work & Travel and also Future Leaders Exchange Program, while these are aimed at young people, university age and high school age respectively, J-1 also covers other short term educational exchange programs.
You cannot get this visa without being involved with an educational exchange program because these organizations are the sponsors for the participants and are the ones approved to issue the invitation, such as the DS-2019 form.

I got that visa a few years ago

I think it is a visa only for full-time students and is for less than 6 months.

It's a single entry visa too, so you can't leave the country during the visa and return.
