Michel de Castelnau, sieur de la Mauvissière, served for 10 years as the French ambassador to Queen Elizabeth’s court from 1559 through 1570.

I don't think it was de Castlenau. This site from Allrefer.com says "from 1575 to 1585 he served as ambassador to England."

He might have gone to diplomatic missions, but he was likely not the official ambassador to England.
"In 1557 a command in the navy was given to him, and the cardinal proposed to get him knighted. This, however, he declined, and then rejoined the French army in Picardy. Various delicate missions requiring tact and discretion were entrusted to him by the constable de Montmorency, and these he discharged so satisfactorily that he was sent by the king, Henri II, to Scotland with despatches for Mary Stuart, then betrothed to the dauphin (afterwards Francis II). From Scotland he passed into England, and treated with Queen Elizabeth respecting her claims on Calais (1559), a settlement of which was effected at the congress of Cateau-Cambrésis."

An Encyclopedia Britannica article on de Castlnau says
"After the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis (1559), he entered the king's service and was sent on diplomatic missions in 1560 to England, Germany, Savoy, and Rome. After the death of King Francis II he was charged with accompanying the widowed queen, Mary Stuart, back to Scotland."
My best guess is that he went on diplomatic missions for France (to England) but may not have been the offiical ambasssador. |
