The city of Washington is not located in a state. It is located in the District of Columbia, as previously stated. So instead of the state's abbreviation it has D.C. |

When the founding fathers created a Capitol, they didn't want any state to have the right to say...seat of government...so they made an independant area they called the District of Columbia. |

It's the Distrist of Columbia it is not a state but an area created for the Capital of the country, because the founding fathers didn't want the Capital if the United States to be in and there fore susceptable to the wishes or influence of a particular state. |

The capital of the United States is Washington, DC (District of Columbia) as versus Washington state (on the west coast of the US). The capital city was formed as and placed in a separate federal district to maintain the equivalence of stature among the states and to insure that federal law would not interfere unduly with the state in which the capital would otherwise be located.
Besides, those guys would have never stopped squabbling about who's state it was going to be in otherwise. |
