The German passport allows visa-free entry to the same amount of countries (155) but it has a social component being cheaper for young people and children.
The fees listed are to be paid by Germans living overseas. In Germany the passport costs:
• for adults older than 24 years €59 ($88)
• for juveniles €37.50 ($56)
• for children €13 ($19.50)

Because they have to do a background search to ensure the information you give them is correct, and that you don't have any crimes against you that you might be fleeing. That costs money. |

Maybe if you factor in the security features and the privileges you get for having one, it would not look so costly anymore. The US passport allows its holder to visa-free entry/visa on arrival to 155 countries. How much did you save on visa costs and/or time applying for these? Now divide the passport fee by the number of years that it is valid for use. $10 per year?

Not as expensive as some other countries.
If you can't afford the few $$$ for a passport, you shouldn't be traveling out of the country. |
