"Spotter 888" has provided information as of 2002. Meanwhile 25 countries are forming the Schengen zone. Switzerland has joined as the latest country on December 12, 2009. You DO NOT need a seperate visa for Switzerland.
Schengen members are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
The Schengen visa will authorize to travel to all those countries. Once you have entered the Schengen zone there will be no further general immigration controls on travelling between those countries. As exception from policy Switzerland still performs immigration procedures for air travel; but you will be good to go by just showing your passport with the valid Schengen visa if arriving by a flight.
For land travel passport controls have been abolished between Switzerland and the surrounding neighbor countries. The border however is still manned since Switzerland is not part of the European customs union and therefore customs officer still check travellers on the spot.
The application for the visa must be made at the embassy of the country in which you plan to stay the longest time. If that should be equally distributed you need to apply at the embassy or consulate of the country through which you plan to enter the Schengen area.

I am a british citizen , and therefore when I went to Switzerland I wasn't using a visa, but from a google search it seems that HJAS is right, and as of late last year a schengen visa is valid for Switzerland. |
