Will debt affect whether I am chosen to be a US Diplomat?

I have read that if a person has had a history of unpaid bills or debt, it can affect whether or not they can become a US Diplomat in another country. Is this true? I have a couple of medical bills that went to collections and parking tickets, will this prevent me from getting chosen?
Additional Details
I mean a US Diplomat, not Ambassador. Considering what diplomats are paid I find that answer highly suspect.

Hi Zerrah -- yes, it might affect your ability to get a security clearance. A big question is WHY you're in debt, and also it calls into question a person's judgment, discretion, etc.
It's not the final and only factor, though. |

First, the odds of you becoming a U.S. ambassador, even with perfect credit, are next to zero. YOu probably don't have the skills, knowledge, education, or connections to get in, especially since you are using Yahoo! answers for an answer.
