Will our children have dual German and US citizenship?

My wife has dual citizenship in the US and Germany. She was born in the US and has dual citizenship because her mother was born in Germany. I am an American citizen only. My wife and I live and work in the US only. Will our children (who will be born in the US) have dual citizenship, or be eligible for dual citizenship?

Your children will not have dual citezenship right away, but are eligible for dual citizenship. If they are going to be born in the US, then they are US citizens. But if you ever decide to go to Germany, then you can just apply your kids for citezenship, and they will be atomatically be German citizens as well.

If your wife was born before 12/31/99, then she will automatically pass on her German citizenship to her children.

They also will NOT have to chose one of the two later on.

1You can become a German citizen either by birth, by adoption as a minor, or by naturalization.
Step2A person can become a German citizen through the Einburgerung (German naturalization) process. To do so the person must satisfy certain legal requirements.
Step3If you are born to both an American and German background, you are required to have the dual citizenship, regardless of which country you were born in. If one of your parents are German, and was not born in Germany, that you do not qualify.
Step4A child who was born in Germany can still apply for a dual citizenship if both of his/her parents were born in America. The child must by the age of 23, chose between American and German citizenship, as recognized under German law.
Step5If you are an American-German male, you must register with the U.S. Selective Service System within 3 months of turning 18. You are not exempt from the German military service

Yes, they will have dual citizenship. However at the age of 21 they will have to choose whether they want to be German or American. If they choose to remain American, they will loose their German citizenship at that point.
