Work at US Consulate in Vietnam ?

I am a US Citizen, I plan to move to Vietnam and really love to work at the US Consulate in Vietnam. Anybody know how to...or ways to have a position in there? I don't have work and residency pemits as required... I am not Family members of U.S. Goverment employees oficially assigned to Post & under Chief of Mission as well......

There are literally thousands of qualified people wanting to work for the US Consulate. Without Government connections, and even with, you have little chance.
Without some kind of very special education and experience, your best shot is teaching English. Due to the economic slow down there aren't near as many teaching jobs as there once was. If you're planing on teaching make sure and bring all the needed documentation from your home country. Also, be sure to have it translated and notarized! |

The most common channel through going about getting a job working in diplomacy with the consulate is through the Foreign Service, the backbone of the State Department. However, it doesn't just happen, you must be trained, work within the U.S. (usually), be assigned, train for the country your assigned to, and then work your way up. Some members of the Foreign Service never leave the country and others are deployed right away, an interest in the country is sometimes not enough. Thorough knowledge of Vietnam's history, current political situation, legal system and language are minimum requirements.
There are, however, other channels. You may get lucky and find that our embassy or consulate is in need of a secretary or typist, this can be found by looking at each of our consulate and embassies web-pages under careers or job vacancies. |

Jobs with any embassy or consulate go through the State Department. You would have to apply there. You go where they send you. Overseas postings are generally limited to 3 years before they reassign you back to US or another posting. Fluency in a foreign language(s) may help, but they have a knack of sending you where you don't know the language and have to learn in a hurry!
If you only want to work in Vietnam because you are moving there anyway, you are probably out of luck. One exception I know of is for top-notch translators, on call, used as needed, paid per diem. Simultaneous translators are particularly in demand, but that requires native fluency in two or more languages plus special training, and then you would need experience and references. |
