Sorry, but 1960 is so completely wrong that he's insulting. US Embassies and Consulates are staffed by highly skilled, well trained, and hard working professional foreign service officers and specialists; only the occasional ambassador to a first-world country is a political appointee, and even they are pretty competent. Yes, the work can be stressful and unrewarding, but so what? So is working at Walmart. And I haven't met a single officer who is politically connected or rich. Most of us are perfectly normal Americans. I myself was born in Portland Oregon to a machinist and a housewife.

Here is the State Department's info page: look in the far left column for US embassies and consulates, and in the center for foreign service officers and specialists, plus there are many other links there, besides, that will give you a good and accurate picture of what working for the USG abroad involves. If you have specific questions, you can ask me, a foreign service officer for 21 years.

ps - the pay and benefits are excellent, as they should be for people who work in places most Americans have never heard of, and would never go.

Try the U.S. Department of State

Check for federal jobs on line (foreign service openings).

If you are in a country other then USA, visit the American Embassy in that country.

When the Coalition Provisional authority ended the US Embassy baghdad took over. Immediately the food was better, and embassy staff that didnt do an honest days work came in. I would love to work for the embassy huge salaries, no work That is the American way.

Benefits? You must be kidding.

Workers at embassies are generally politically connected, or connected via wealth; the adult children of politicians or the wealthy, doing their "part" in their version of "community service". It is VERY politicized, highly competitive, stressful, and often unrewarding. The height of bureacracy, you're more apt to become drowned in high-brow social networking and excess, than any real diplomacy.

OR you wind up someplace dangerous, where your reports and advice are totally ignored by those who prefer to take the path of "higher profit"...or less fiscal loss...regardless of cost of lives.

If you want to do some good in this world, stop believing the propaganda, and drop the idealism. Once you understand who is really running things on this planet, you will know what to do...who to seek work with.

...or join the rest of us in Armageddon.
