Writing to diplomats, how do you address that person?

If it just a diplomat, there is no formal address. If it is the ambassador, the address would say, "The Hon. John Doe, American Ambassador" and the opening would say, "Dear Sir/Madam" or "Dear Mr./Madam Ambassador." If the ambassador is foreign, the address should say, "His/Her Excellency John Doe, Ambassador of Country" and the greeting would be the same. |

When speaking to the Ambassador, sir/madam or Mr/Ms. Ambassador.
When writing, an ambassador to the US is addressed His Excellency John Smith Ambassador of .... The letter starts with dear sir/madam or dear Mr./Ms/Mrs Ambassador.
An American ambassador is addressed The Honorable John Smith,
American Ambassador. Salutation the same as above. |

It depends on the country and their title, each has their own ways, you can find the number for the embassy or department on the web, they all have them now (even Iran in English) so it wouldn't be too hard to find out. |
