I am aware that a Citizen of the U.S. needs passports, but do Permanent Residents need passports do? Like for example, a Resident of the U.S. travels to Mexico by Car, when coming back, will she/he need to show some kind of Passport like a Citizen?
Also, is it necessary to show your passport when entering Mexico and then when coming back to the U.S.?
Finally, does the passport need to be a Mexican Passport, or a U.S. Passport?

They will need to show their US Permanent Resident Card and possibly their passport from their home country to reenter the US.

If you are a US Citizen you currently need a passport to travel between US, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean by AIR. In Summer 2008 you will also need one if travelling by LAND or SEA (not January 2008, time has been extended). If you are driving before then you will need a Gov't issued ID and a birth certificate.

If you are a Permanent Resident in the US then you will need to show your home country's passport and your Green Card when reentering the US. So if you are from Mexico, you will need to have a Mexican Passport, if you are from Canada you need a Canadian passport, if you are from Australia, you need an Australian passport.

if you are a resident of the US you will only be able to get a passport of Mexico, whether you travel by car of plane? you had better have your green card when reentering the US:and please get a passpor if you do not have one.
Land or sea travelers must have a valid U.S. passport (or U.S. citizenship documents such as a certified copy (not a simple photocopy or facsimile) of a U.S. birth certificate, a Naturalization Certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Citizenship are acceptable along with photo identification, such as a state or military issued ID).

U.S. legal permanent residents in possession of their I-551 Permanent Resident card may board flights to the U.S. from Mexico.

Vehicle Permits: Tourists wishing to travel beyond the border zone with their vehicle must obtain a temporary import permit or risk having their vehicle confiscated by Mexican customs officials. At present the only exceptions to the requirement are travel in the Baja Peninsula and in the state of Sonora only for vehicles entering through the Nogales port of entry. Travelers are advised that the â€œSonora Onlyâ€ exception through the Nogales port of entry will expire at the end of 2007.
