Howdy! I want to adopt a girl that is 17 years old and from Bolivia. She is a friend of the family (like a daughter to my fiance') and I would like to try to get her here and legally adopt her (my fiance' and her "natural" kids will come to be citizens after we marry, but I don't want to have to leave the other girl behind. I would like to know when (for this type of immigration purpose) when the INS draws the line at adoption age? She is going to be 18 in May. Can I adopt her in California now and then work on immigration stuff later? If I adopt here now legally, but it doesn't get resolved until she's (say...) 18 and a half, can she still get her citizenship for being the (adoptive) daughter of a US citizen?

Verne is correct except that she isn't going to be your legal stepchild so you can't petition her for a green card even if you do marry, unless she is already the child (adopted or not) of your fiancee. |

It is too late. Adoption after age 16 gains no immigration benefit
If you marry before age 18, you can petition for her as your stepchild. |
