hello, my name is danny, my mother is korean citizen(father is spanish/american), she is still living in korea. i was born in Ft Riley Kansas. my mother stayed in the usa for not long and went back to korea. My father kept me with him in the usa. i had recently found my mother while serving in U.S Airforce being stationed in Gunsan airbase korea. when i found her, she had been in a hospital for 7-8 years and still is in the hospital, or atleast that is what i was told.
what im trying to ask is what is it that i do to become a korean citizen?. If im able to or not?, i am now 24 years old, i planned on getting my bachelors so i could teach english in korea as a job. when i was in korea i really enjoyed my stay learning about my korean culture and the language. I made lots of friends along with the reunion with my mother(i felt very comfortable as if i belonged.. with no problems just becuase i am only "half korean"), i would also like to look into getting to see more family. from what i understand my mothers family still lives in korea aswell. My dream is to live the rest of my life in korea, with the ability to be closer and visit my mother in the hospital at any time that i wanted.
i am back in the states, done and out of the airforce.. so things are lil bit complicated to stay in contact with my mother,
looking for advise on steps to take to fulfill my dream.

ok. I understand what u are going through. I am an american but not korean descent who is a south korean visa holder. i have been to korea a couple times here from usa. I emphasize with your situation. there are many ways for u to go to korea. first things u need to get done. Under usa and south korean law U cannot have dual citizenship. U were born here in the usa. One of the most important things u have to look out for is the military duty. Look on my links that I did put together for u. this does explain somewhat about citizenship for korea. Then I do have some links for u to go to like for teaching english in korea. The best thing U can do is further your college education. They changed the laws for teaching english. There is a program for teaching english on a two year degree but for less money. There are couple programs that u can teach english on two year degree. One of them that I saw is ask now and that junior epik one. U can look at dave's esl cafe in the south korean jobs and discussions boards. Also look at worknplay. they have lots of jobs that can help. The visas to korea for u are very good. I put a link for visas for u But for teaching english, u need a e 2 visa series to that sort or f-2 or something like that so u can teach english legally. It is easier if u get the f series visa so u can teach without going through e2 series visa(less hassle by korean gov) Then if u want to visit without the e2 and f series visa, always go for the c-3 short term visitors' visa for mutiple entry good for 5 years. U have many options for visa and teaching english. the most important for u to determine what steps are needed for your nationality for korea and military service. this rest will fall in place with time as u work on it.
I hoped I did help u with this. Good luck in the future.

The government of South Korea does not allow dual citizenship beyond the age of 21. If you were somehow able to acquire South Korean citizenship it would require you to renounce your US Citizenship. Additionally, even if you find a way to live there as a permanent resident, retaining your US citizenship, you could be subjected to compulsory military service due to your Korean descent. |
