green card holder wanting to apply for naturalization but it can be proved that did not abandoned continous residency because of medical matters outside the country.

Once again..... You do not have any potential problems until you've been gone for over 1 year.

However, being gone for more than 6 consecutive months will break your period of consecutive residence and prolong your wait to file for citizenship.

With a travel permit you can stay outside the USA for up to 2 consecutive years.
