I am glad there is a PR in this forum. There aren't too many in New York! There are too many in Pennsylvania!! Since the PR's have come to my town 20 years ago it has gon to sh***. I am not a racist, just telling the truth. Everyone in PA knows that they come to my state because they have better state welfare benefits. They didn't come for jobs because when they came my city's unemployment rate was the highest in the state. Our schools are the worst in the state and all of the middle class have fled to the suburbs at an alarming rate. My friend is an assistant principal at the inner city HS where I graduated, and she says it is a mess. When I graduated 20 years ago they started an in-school day care for teens with babies so they can stay in school. They had 5 kids in there the first year. When I went to that school it was multicultural and mostly white, black and asian. The puerto Rican population was few. Now that school is 75% PR and they have three daycare rooms fill to the max, 90% are on free or reduced lunch, They have police hall monitors because the crime was out of control. We can say that the problems in our town are because of the PRs. There is garbage all over the streets, crime is at an all time high and most ones commiting the crimes are PR (read the police reports in the paper) PR flags are everywhere, gangs of all sort, pregnant teens everywhere, bilingual signs,... I could go on. It is not racist, it is the truth. PRs have it good. They can recieve welfare and every imaginable socical service available in Pa and They double dip and keep adresses in NJ and NY. It is not racist it is a fact. The Us Govt. sends Billions of dollars to Pr because it is a territory, yet the Pr people vote again and again not to become a state and they vote not to become their own country. There is so much focus on the Illegals, we in the north east haven't paid too much attention to the mexicans. Believe me, we talk about the PRs. We don't know what to do. They are legal and they are destroying our state. I hope the rest of the country will take notice of the Problem Puerto Ricans pose also. Does any one realize that there are more PRs living in the united states then in PR? And if a PR is born in the us they are US citizens but if asked, they will ALWAYS tell you they are a PR. This is another group that wants everthing our country has to offer but doesn't want to become one of us. Is there anyone else in the NE that has see what the PR population has effected their towns? Please share. Sorry, if I offended you, I am just telling the truth.

We have rolling green hills and covered bridges, Lots of Sauerkraut, pirogies,and beer. I must warn you on hot summer days we like to blare our German Polka music to pi** off the neighbors.

No. Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States. It's basically a state, but they do not pay taxes. If a foreign country were to attack Puerto Rico, it would essentially be an attack on the United States.

Unfortunately, once anti-immigrant hysteria is stirred it could go in that direction. Of course, Puerto Ricans are legal immigrants, being US citizens, but it is a short step from demonizing illegal Hispanic immigrants to attacking legal Hispanic immigrants. Remember the lessons of history. If you do not speak up when they first start targeting minority groups because you are not a member of that minority group there may not be anyone left to speak for you when they finally come for you.

Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens from birth - even if they never step foot on the mainland. Therefore, they're not immigrants to this country.

well, dear, let's not parade our ignorance too proudly...Puerto Rico is a possession/territory of the US and Puerto Ricans can come and go as they please in the US...so they can never be ILLEGAL immigrants

There is a big difference about the amount of people who come over in little boats compared to the amount of people who come over in huge tidel waves from mexico. I am sure that the amount of puerto ricins do not even make a dent on the amount of people who come here from mexico. I really wonder if there is anyone left in mexico.

It wouldn't surprise me. The economy in Puerto Rico is really tanking due to poor economic leadership, and like Mexico, the ambitious people know they're better off in the mainland US than to stay on the island. The legality of the issue is different since they have US citizenship, but be assured that when suburban neighborhoods in the south and midwest start filling up with dark-skinned spanish speakers from Puerto Rico who come to "steal jobs from 'hardworking Americans'", the "I'm not a racist but..." argument will sound all too familiar.

Puerto Rican's are born US citizens because Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the US. We are as "American" as you. Actually, did you know that the majority of our military is made up of Puerto Ricans and Mexican Americans?There are too many in New York? Are you being serious? You saying that there are too many Puerto Ricans living in New York, or anywhere else for that matter, is the same thing as saying there are too many Texans that live in Florida, etc. People move to other states. Its not a big deal.
And the current situation is not only about Mexican immigration, it is about the whole subject but people are just focusing on Mexico because we share a border with them.
Is there a problem with speaking Spanish? You did know that the US has no official language, right? In the rest of the world, especially Europe, it is almost culturally unacceptable if you are not at least bilingual, but you are criticizing Spanish speakers? People like you make me sad. If you live in New York step outside of your community and look around you. Do you realize how many people of other nationalities there are? Isn't that one of the things that is supposed to make this country so great?
