Get with the times! It's not 1907. The issues that were going on in those days do not apply to those are going on now. If you care so much about what Teddy said nearly 100 years ago, as a woman, you should also be keep all of your political ideas to yourself since 100 years ago, women had no say in politics.

I see it says IMMIGRANTS, and immigrants may become American Citizens with all due requirements. But it states nothing about ILLEGAL immigrants.
Ever heard of how a meaning can get lost in translation. I feel illegals have the notion the word refers to them somehow, but don't get the meaning of what illegal means. Illegal means you have done something unlawful, in other words, you have broken a law.
What does breaking a law in Mexico or other Latin American countries mean to you? Or is that in these countries "breaking the law" holds no weight because the Legal System there is so corrupted and unfair and real justice is unheard of?

Do you REALLY believe that these people want to STAY illegal? Think for a minute... being illegal, you get the worst of the worst jobs, your employers rip you off, you can never go back "home" to see your family because you may not be able to repeat your illegal entry, and you can't go to the police even if someone beats you up, robs you, rapes you... the reason they are not becoming legal immigrants is because the immigration process is too lengthy and too expensive. If you're making $3.oo an hour (yes, you CAN pay an illegal immigrant less than minimum wage-- who's he gonna complain to?), how are you going to come up with the $6000-9000 in fees, let alone pay the attorney.

Theodore Roosevelt has some good points... for 1907, when the immigrant influx was lower, there was no cap on how many could become citizens in any one year, and many immigrants already spoke English. Not being able to speak English does not make you less loyal to the US.

Funny how it is very fashionable to have a "Second Nationality" or pledge your allegiance to Ireland on March 17 but not acceptable for anyone else, any other time...

75% of immigrants to the U.S. learn english within ten years of arrival. Many of our grandparents came here from europe. did they all learn english? NO! german was the language for old people who came here. the working and the young learned the language but it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks.

when the US constution came out, it was printed in both english AND GERMAN, so that people could understand it.

First of all I am a legal citizen here in the US, but I support this cause because I feel it is very noble.

Some people don't support this cause because they have never seen their children begging for food around the table and you don't have a penny to feed them. Why do you think they dare to cross the scorching dessert to come into this country? Some people don't support it because they have not seen their children die of hunger or a disease that can easily be cured because of lack of money!!

Yes they work out on the fields picking fruit all day long, raining, snowing, out in the blazing sun for less than minimun pay, or clean urinals, wash the dishes at the restaurants. I understand as someone here on yahoo answers said, that the children have to start somewhere and that they would be doing these types of jobs because they have to start somewhere. Maybe the person is right, but would you like you children to perform these kinds of jobs? I know I would not like my daughter to do this.

Now have you ever wondered why is it that the price of the veggies out in the stores are cheap? Yes, it is because these people come into the US to do these jobs for very little money. If the US starts paying what they are supposed to pay (minimum wage) prices will sure go up. Many people don't understand this because they live off of welfare.

Undocumented Immigrants do not qualify for welfare because of their status in this country. Some people may say that their children do qualify if born here in the US. Yes, they do, but don't forget they are US citizens. Now a days it is not easy to come and have children here in the US if you are not a legal resident. Here where I live, pregnant women that don't have proof of legal residency have to pay all doctor visits adding up to $3000.00 the least.

I am not for the undocumented people who come here and harm others. But the ones who come here to look for a better life for their families, I support. Don't you think that if all they wanted to do is harm, they would cross the river through the night and rob the people near it? Why do they walk miles to cross check points and get norther? Yes, they risk themselves to bring food to their family's table.

I work, go to college and am a mom, and feel very disappointed at those people who live off of welfare, but lets not forget that all US citizens can qualify for it depending on their income, not only the children of these people.

And please understant that it is not onlye the HISPANICS who come here illegally. It is everybody around the world who has seen poverty to the lowest of its levels. One thing some people here in the US will never get to see.

Some people say for them then to come here legally. The keyword here is that they are very poor and that is why they do this illegally.

First of all, I just want to say Teddy Roosevelt was one of the cruelest men in history. Sure your history books may not say it, but he invaded the peaceful country of Hawaii, stole the panama canal (actually the entire territory of Panama) from Colombia. His favorite method of diplomacy was "gun boat" diplomacy. The results of his actions benefited the U.S., but they were not just at all. So if you want to quote a cruel intolerant man, go for it.
