Hi,
I was wondering what I would have to do to get a working visa to go to america for anywhere between 3 months to a year.
I currently live in the UK, although I have lived in america before, but I was only 10 and lived there until i was 14.
I then came back to England to study and met my fiancé just after returning who is a South African. He got his full british citizenship last year and passport so I guess were on the same standing application wise.
Thing was I had to abandon my citizenship when I came back to the UK to live and they say I cannot apply for another 5-7 years. That was about 3 years ago I am now 21.
We moved out to America in the first place because 10 years ago my mom married an american. So that made getting into the USA a lot easier for us. She had a baby a year ago and we dont want to miss out on getting to know him because we are so far away.
So to summarize:
1. We are both UK citizens.
2. Mother is married to a US Born Citizen.
3. Previously abandoned citizenship.
With that info, does anyone know if it still be possible to get a working visa, how much will it cost, how long will it take etc.

Ah sorry its not citizenship i meant its permanent residency that I gave up. Had a card with my picture on it, it was a long time ago.
As for proffession I am a programmer/website/graphic designer, I am self employed.

What citizenship did you abandon?? You cannot "abandon" a US citizenship. What nationality is your biological father?
Your mother as a green card holder can petition you to get permanent residence in the US and you can eventually tag your husband along but that could take a decade or more If your mother becomes a US citizen it will shave SOME time off that.
If you have a skill in demand you might get a sponsorship from a company. Most work visas are for about 3 years. These are hard to get.
The US does offer several categories of working visas that are temporary but nothing like a short term work visit for UK citizens.Aussies Kiwis and Irish who are recently in school can get on such a visa. |
