American citizens visitng the UK ..what obstacles could they expect?

Do they need visa's ETC ..? and is there a noticeable difference in immigration laws between the two countries?

We don't need visas for a short stay (up to 90 days). Its pretty easy to visit the UK. Just book a flight or whatever and go. Immigration is a much different matter. Its quite difficult to immigrate to the UK or EU these days unless you are a student or have a highly sought after skill and have found a job.
