American marrying Canadian, residing outside of the U.S.?

American marrying Canadian, residing outside of the U.S.?

I am a U.S. citizen, and will be marrying my Canadian girlfriend this summer, in the U.S. The kicker is, that we both will be living/working in Spain. I have a spanish visa and so does she, on our respective passports. We will be living in Madrid for the next two years. I am trying to figure out that the best options for us are in terms of getting her a green card.

Any Ideas?

Thanks for all of the responses so far.

Just some addition info. It could easily be 10 years before we plan on moving back to the U.S. I just want it to be as fluid as possible when we do. I guess the real question is if she can get "credit" for her time being married to me while not in the US.

Yes, If you want her to become an American Citizen she must live in the U.S for 5 years as an Alien Resident ( Green Card ) However, while in Spain. Go to the American Embassy in Madrid or Barcelona and apply for her Resident Card. If I am not mistaken, they will issue a Resident Card as soon as she step foot in the U.S. upon entering.

You will need to apply for a spouse visa about a year before you plan on moving to the US.

NO

no green card until she DOES move to usa.

If she did have a green card, she MUST live in USA for 4 out of every 5 years - which means no more than 1 year out of USA every 5 years.

you cant live in spain doing that.

And when she does MOVE to usa permanently - the only "credit" she can get is a permanent green card right from the first application (no conditions) - which means she can apply for citizenship 3 years later. All this because you were already married for more than 2 years when you applied.

I would make an appointment at the U.S. Embassy or consulate, they have the expertise and the ability to assist you. It should be no problem to get her a "green card".
