Can a schengen visa be extended before it expires?

If its type C visa (up to 90 days visit) then it can only be extended on Medical grounds. If its type D (Long term i.e. more than 90 days stay) then it can be extended if ur purpose to stay or live in the country doesnt change.

If its a non-immigrant visa, it cannot be extended, you'll have to get a new one.
