Those wanting to help improve society should volunteer to mentor a migrant, it was suggested yesterday.

Mentors could teach newly-arrived immigrants to speak English and to apply for jobs, according to the report of a review ordered by Gordon Brown.

They could help individuals and familes adjust to the subtleties of life in Britain and show them around their new neighbourhoods.

Those mentors looking for a "more socially focused" relationship could offer migrants a warm welcome in the form of "a great big smile and a great big hug".

The plan for volunteers to spend an hour or more each week helping immigrants get used to their new country was published by former Attorney General Lord Goldsmith, who is running the Prime Minister's Citizenship Review.

It gets on your nerves just listenening to the twaddle they come up with! The immigrants coming here are seeing us as a soft touch anyway thats why they go through so many countries to get here. If we start hugging them as well they will think we are all barmy! Come to think of it, perhaps a few of them might turn around and head back the way they came from - Lol, worth a try!

Perhaps hugs should be reserved for the British workers who have lost their livelihoods in the face of large scale economic migration.

Quite a cunning plan really, because it costs the government a shedload of money to employ people to do things like the teaching of English and the helping to find a job, all that kind of stuff. So instead let's ask for volunteers, save pots of money and spend it on other things, suggestions please.....

i think if a man comes here to be part of Britain and British society, work hard and pay he's taxes make he's life along side us, then they are more than welcome as far as I'm concerned. i think people have the right to move freely around the world and BE made welcome. but those that come to cause trouble and pull Britain apart should be instantly deported. 'without expensive legal support'. and anyone committing a crime should be deported too. but we must have a government that recognises when the country is full by listening to the people. our present PM seems ' brain wise' to be on a par with an exceptionally stupid haddoc.

I think its a great idea that the US should adopt. Not only that, we could ship those who don't want to help with anything and say "no" to immigrants in this nation of immigrants back to their ancestral homes. BTW, my ancestors came to the new world in the 17th century and have been welcoming immigrants ever since. Thats the TRUE American perspective, not the "I've got mine and I'll keep you from getting yours" that some of the newer immigrants advocate.

How would you feel living in a country where you were in fear of your life and where people are regularly tortured and where you cannot say anything different to what you are told to say or think.
