We're currently in the UK(lived here since we were born). We are buying a house there this year with the intention of moving permanently ie giving up British citizenship. Any idea of the process and how long it takes?

Just because you move doesn't mean you lose British citizenship automatically, don't just give it up there are a lot of good reasons for keeping it unless you just don't understand how citizenship works which seems like it. Only way for you to lose it if you renounce it at an embassy or your foreign ministry.

Once you leave the UK and are in Bulgaria for more than 183 days, then you are technically a resident. Once there you can apply for residency, but you will still be a British citizen. You will always be a British citizen. Most Brits going to another EU country just take up residency, though saying that, many don't, they just try and get away with living in another country.
Once you become a resident then you will be paying your taxes in Bulgaria. Make sure you inform the inland revenue before you leave, otherwise you may have to pay twice. |

I don't wish to be rude but you might want to re-consider that option - Britain allows for dual nationality, you don't need to renounce your citizenship to live in another EU country & although Bulgaria is in the EU, there are restrictions on the movement of Bulgarians in a number of EU countries - the UK being one of those countries. |
