Are Migrant Workers really stealing our jobs?

They aren't stealing any jobs in my area. They take the jobs no one wants, like harvesting crops for 12 hours, 7 days a week.

these people are also in my local tesco. they dont work for themselves. they work for a company which is probably taking half their earnings. they are often standing around without a car to clean so i dont think they are making a good living. and also if any british people approached tesco to ask permission to work in the car park, they would get the health and safety rule book thrown at them and would be expected to take out public liability insurance which would cost a fortune.

Of course they are taking our jobs. When you see migrant, you probably should say illegal alien. I am an immigrant. A legal one though and the legality makes all the difference.

Look at the construction industry. American workers are being outcompeted because the illegals are willing to accept a much lower pay because of their illegal status. If they were citizens or resident aliens then they would be able to get higher pay and compete with other Americans evenly. However, they are willing to get less pay because that is the main reason employers are willing to take the risk in hiring them. They also don't complain because they are here illegally. I used to do construction work but I have seen the American workers replaced by lower paying Mexicans. They generally are not Mexican Americans but Mexican Nationals who are citizens of Mexico. Now the only Americans left in the construction industry are either higher skilled employees, managers or union workers.

I wonder what all our noncollege americans are going to do for work as industries become more skill intensive and illegals are taking up the nonskilled jobs. I also worry about how America will compete with Europe, India and China when we have allowed massive influxes of illegals most of whom do not have a high school education and have a higher birth rate. Just look at the percentage of high school graduation for latinos as well as their higher birth rates. Caucasians are now a minority in California which is where I am now. I am afraid we are going to further lose our competitive advantage because of the illegal immigration of nonskilled workers who will generally have children who will also have much lower levels of education. Some will call me a racist but these are the statistics and it is pointing toward an American decline.

If they are so enterprising, let them go back to their own country and set up a business there. Nothing to stop them is there, except perhaps benefits, healthcare, education, housing ....

In my town a little group of east Europeans 'set up' picking the pockets and handbags of shoppers in the market.

Edit: Hal .. I cannot think why you would want anybody to have to stand out in the rain or snow every day just for your convenience to have your car washed. If you can run a car, then you can afford to pay the kinds of prices that allow for REAL businesses to flourish. The trouble with the 'British workers dont want these jobs' argument is that NO workers should have to endure the poor pay, bad environments and insecure working conditions that employers such as these farmers offer.

There's two million on the dole and we keep the door open to more immigrants. The maths is simple: fewer immigrants means more opportunities for our own workers, especially as it should be made impossible to sit on your a*** on the dole all day.

No, they are applying for jobs and getting them or they are setting up on their own. They are not sitting on benefits moaning about migrants. If the moaners of our nation were to wake up for a second they'd realise that they could also do this both here and in the rest of europe if they wanted to.

Yes and they are depressing the wages. The government is to blame too. If they cut people off the welfare, they would be forced to work.

Its not so much the car cleaning and toilet scrubbing jobs they are stealing, but there have been several stories in the papers recently of towns where the main industry is - for example - steel and lots of local men are out of work, being swamped by specially shipped-in migrant workers who the company are bringing over because its cheaper to do that than train up and offer decent, secure jobs to the locals. This is whats causing all the strikes and protests at the moment.

I wish left wingers could understand that it has nothing to do with "racism" or "hating" Polish people etc - its usually just coming down to ordinary men who are in fear for their livelihoods in the current economic climate.

The other reason why British people wouldn't necessarily want to clean cars at Â£5 a pop is because you might not necessarily make enough by doing that to cover your rent/mortgage and living expenses (you would lose your Housing benefit, Council Tax benefit by doing this and might not necessarily make enough to cover it - it depends how many cars you could clean, not everyone wants to pay Â£5 for a car-clean these days when we're all saving money . . .)

Unemployment is caused by recession in the economy. It doesn't mean that there isn't any work to be done, it just means that capitalists are unwilling to invest in industry and services.

I've had enough of this economic system. It rewards the rich for their incompetence and makes workers pay when it goes into crisis. As if that wasn't enough, the rich and government try to get us to turn on each other by using racism and xenophobia. This opens the door to the backward scum of the BNP.

Workers need to unite against the ideas that divide us. Immigrants to this country need to be signed up into the unions so we can stand together to defend jobs and conditions.

If things are ever going to change it's going to have to be the workers who do it!

Migrant workers can't "steal" jobs. The jobs have to be open which means someone quit or was fired. THEN, if they are illegal, someone has to be willing to risk losing their business or receiving a large fine to employ them. Its pretty hard to get a job where I live at the moment. There's a lot of competition for even low level job. I don't get hired because there are people who have a 2 year degree and are getting hired for a cashier job. I HIGHLY doubt that someone who struggles with English and may be illegal would be hired over someone who was legal in this current economy. The only people hiring illegals are people you don't want to work for. Scum bags that find ways to pay less then minimum wage and are willing to risk their business to save a few dollars a week by hiring illegals.
For there to be illegals, there MUST be enablers of those people.
My husband is a legal immigrant. He has struggled to find ANY job. He has all the appropriate documentation AND a degree and great job references. People do NOT want to hire him. The last place he interviewed said they didn't need another "canucki" local slang for Canadian.
If someone loses their job to someone from a 3rd world country who struggles with English and has questionable paperwork, then you must have been one HECK of a bad employee if your employer would rather higher an illegal then keep you.

No, they are not "stealing" them, they are being used deliberately to price the indigenous worker out of the jobs market.
As for the "car wash" theory, what about the existing small garages that offered car wash facilities? Where do those workers go?
Of course people won't work for pittance wages when benefits are more advantageous, that is common sense, what is not common sense is to make benefits so lucrative whilst at the same time pricing the less skilled out of the workplace.
Do you really believe government are unaware of this fact, or are you politically enough aware to see what is really going on and what has been planned for decades?
The indigenous population were significant in number to "fill" all jobs, if, and a big if, they did not have sufficient education/training to do so then whose lack of foresight was that, who has dumbed down education and vocational training to this extent? Who has encouraged the benefits culture, whilst overseeing the demise of our industry and infrastructure.
Could it be the same people who tell us they need to "import" immigrants to do the job because the indigenous gave up working for peanuts decades ago?

Migrant workers are the modern slaves. Low pay, low quality(due to lack of education and training), poor treatment, poor benefits. No they are not stealing jobs, they are doing what the British won't for a price a British born citizen would never accept.

I actually have an interesting theory about that! If the people who hire migrants stopped being cheap and paid good, they would be able to hire British citizens and rid Britain of "job stealer immigrants."

from my point of view, the British are so proud of them selves and feel that the menial job are left for the foreigners.

Interestingly the UK government supports laziness by giving people job seeker allowance even if they are capable of going to earn a living.

As student of HRM I will say the current economic situation will force most of the to go out and look for job. This is because the money given to them by the government dodoesn't seems sufficient to live on.

And the new government legislation which is trying to get all capable people back to work, through the help of the job centre plus will really help the issue.
