yes... the new world was called America... North which consists of canada, USA, Mexico, and central america
south, which is colombia, bolivia, brazil, etc...
Us United States citizens consider ourselves Americans since our country doesn't have a specific name for our nation.. |
|

~^~^~^~^

They would be called South Americans. Just as there are Central and North Americans. |

Yes people in South America no matter what country they are from are South "Americans" and people from North America are North "Americans".
We the people from the United States are just a custom to calling ourselves Americans. We could call ourselves United Statens but American is easier.
People from areas of south american countries generally call themselves by their "countries name. ergo. Mexican, Peruvian, Cuban, Brazillian or Portegese" it all depends on where your from and what you feel like calling yourself. |

Yes, we are. Are you Uruguayan too? I see the map was taken from the RAU site.
I guess the ethimology of American to express nationality comes from the colony times. I bet people use to make a difference between Americans and British, right as we did between criollos and españoles or portugueses. For some reason they kept calling themselves that even after becoming a free nation.
On the other hand, other people in America had to distinguish themselves from another countries, as we had to distinguish from Argentinians, Brazilians, Paraguayans (from America) and Spanish, British and French (from Europe)
By the way, the full name of Brazil is: United States of Brazil, but the call themselves brazilians.
I prefer to say USAmericans. I always use that word on my blog. |

Mr. Morden

Sure. The term American has come to be associated with people from the United States. However, technically, anyone from North or South American can be considered an American just like someone in Italy is a European and an Italian. |

AMERICA is a Continent not a nation by itself. It is like saying that the only Asians are the Chinese and not the other 15 or so countries in Asia. |

You're confusing a nation with a covenant. We're the only nation on the American contenent to have "america" in the name of our nation. None of the many south american countries have America in their name. They'd be Brazlians, chilians, argentinians, etc... |

Technically, but I wouldnt call them that, I would call them by their country. If you are from Peru, I wouldnt call you American, I would call you Peruvian or Peruano. |

Americans in the sense of being born on one of the two American continents.
But not in the sense of the American nationality. If you're wondering why we get to call ourselves that, remember that we were the first independent country in the Western Hemisphere.
It's also why our long distance code is 1. We kinda invented the phone (Bell may have been Scottish, but he did it here, so we invented it). |
