I know things can change by the time I'm able to move there but I want to know what to expect.

There are 5 ways you can move to the UK as an American
1 - get accepted into a UK university, then apply for a student visa. You are allowed to work 20 hours/week while in full-time education
2 - get a job in the US with a company that has offices in the UK, and have them transfer you over
3 - get married to a British citizen and live with him/her in the UK
4 - if you have a Masters degree or PhD, you can apply on your own for the Tier 1 visa which does not require company sponsorship, and allows you to work in the UK for up to 3 years, and is renewable as long as you remain in employment and reach a minimum salary level
5 - find a company to sponsor you - but you need very specialised skills so the company can prove they advertised the position in the EU for a minimum of 6 weeks and not one EU citizen was qualified for the job |
