No one is saying you must change the way you are, but in order for one country to run smoothly, all the people need to know one common language. You can know Swahili, Chinese or Slobovokian as long as you also know ENGLISH. People can listen to the kind of music they like. They can dress the way they want (East-Indian women wear some beautiful silk sarongs or saramis,idk). You don't have to 'act' white or black or anything except what you ARE. Respect others and their choices and you will be respected for yours. Black people don't try to be white and vice versa. We ARE what we ARE. Blend in somewhat, don't 'fight' everything.

Just because they don't live in YOUR neighborhood doesn't mean we don't exist. More are around than you know, you wouldn't always know it if you were looking one straight in the eye. Being Latino doesn't automatically mean we have to listen to reggaeton and hip-hop. I'm half Puerto Rican and my favorite groups are Nine Inch Nails and The Prodigy. Our personalities are defined by much more than out race!

As long as you consider yourself "Hispanic" and not "American" - you really have not fully assimilated.

I don't care what language you speak at home, I don't care what music you listen to, and I really don't care what you bring for lunch, but if you continue to think of yourself as "not American", but something else, then you aren't assimilating into the culture, which is ethnically diverse and theoretically includes ALL other non-political cultural aspects.

My family originally emigrated from Germany. I love pizza. I adore carryout Chinese food. I listen to music by British groups, and Austrian composers and I read books by all sorts of authors.

I'm an American, not a "Euro-American".

just be yourself don't listen to anybody telling you how to act,talk or what to music to listen too ....... cause most people in America aren't 100% American anyways no matter what there skin color is .... and that's the true beauty of the USA where all different but here for the same reasons .

Assimilation doesn't mean you can't enjoy whatever music you want. We only want you to respect the U.S. ...do we have faults?...sure, but you chose to be here, so love it or leave it. You may speak whatever language (multiple languages give you the advantage) but when conducting business or participating in the political process, it would be great if everyone were able to speak English well...after all, how can we be the UNITED STATES if we have very little left that unites us?

Please don't get lighter skin...some of us like tall, dark and handsome (No offense if your short and ugly, but I like my man with a little color.)

I get Mexican women with their 5 kids get on my bus all the time and start babbling at me in Spanish. Then when I tell them I don't speak Spanish, they give me this dirty look. So no, they don't want to assimilate. But hey, their kids will be able to wash my car when they get older.

Be who you want to be. Do what makes you happy. Just because you're brown doesn't mean that all you should listen to is reggaeton. It's the United States of America. It's a melting pot. You should see the music I have on my ipod-from Frank Sinatra to Nirvana to Jay-z to The Fray. BTW, you're probably more educated than most of these morons that post on here.

That's weird. I am african american, cuban,and caucasian. I have never had an issue with african american or hispanic people saying I'm too much this or too much that. Although I have been accosted once or twice by the white side of my family. But I don't allow things like that to bother me. One person doesn't speak for a whole race, therefore we shouldn't judge based on that. Like what you want to like. Listen to what you want to listen to. That's the great thing about being here as an american. You can be your own person. Hell, I listen to Ludacris one minute, Don Omar the next,and ride to Rascal Flatts the other. It's about what makes you happy.

Let me tell you something, I have been going through about the same things lately. What you have to keep in mind is that the idea that only Hispanics are not assimilating, is totally false. When Irish and Italian immigrants were coming in mass, the same thing was said about them. Just like Hispanics, they had their own neighborhoods where they spoke their own language (for Italians). First generation immigrants cannot adapt like people would like to, it's impossible to change in one day what has been part of you your whole life. I also like rock music specially punk and alternative.

Way to go for speaking your mind. I have lots of friends who are the same and then there are the Americans who criticize Americans like me because I enjoy listening to Spanish music and dancing to there music, I can also speak Spanish fluently and when I am with my friends we speak Spanish instead of English whats the big deal if that's who you want to be.

American is one of mexican heritage-ie;great, great, great grand father- born in the states that is a citizen of "The United States of America" a hispanic has the slang of ****- very derogatory to me- but has a heritage from Hispaniola not mexicola. get it straight. black is beautiful, tan is grand but whits is the color of the big boss man

I think it takes a generation or two to be completely "assimilated" but you know what? My parents,grandparents,greatgrandparents, and GREAT GREAT grandparents are from here, but i am still DAMN proud to be Mexican American. Mexico has a BEAUTIFUL culture, there is nothin to be ashamed of. What is the american culture?? Eat fast food everyday, be vapid and shallow and only care about the physical? There is no culture. So keep eating your menudo,tortillas, seviche, and tacos, and keep drinking your jamaica and horchata (preferably not together) and be proud of where you are from.

honestly,what we want is for you to finish your education,pay off any student loans, and then take your family and go back to mexico.maybe with more thoughtful,educated people in mexico it will change so that mexicans dont find it so attractive to come here and burden our country.

We Latinos are a very unique minority in this country. Racially, we're made up of everything from Native Indian to White European and everything in between. Latinos originate from different countries (Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Colombia, Argentina, etc) so our musical tastes are very diverse as well. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking Black music (rap/soul/hiphop) more than White music (rock/punk/metal). As Latinos who live in the U.S., there really isn't anything else to choose from. Actually, there's a few bands breaking ground here in Los Angeles. Check out: Los Abandoned, Curanderos, and Ozomatli. These bands are bilingual and bicultural, like yourself. They might not be famous yet, but I think they're the future of Latino music in the United States.
