A physical barrier will not keep anyone out. Even a heavily fortified Berlin Wall did not stop East Germans from escaping to the West. A fence is something you can go over, under, around or through. Here is what will keep illegals out of the US. An economic depression. If there are continued layoffs, reductions in building construction, plant closings, farm foreclosures and bankruptcies, there will be no one left to pay illegals (or citizens for that matter). The other way to prevent illegal immigration is to assist developing nations to increase their economic strength to keep jobs within their borders. Hmm a modest proposal to solve world hunger? I don't really think that such a "Swift" idea.

I'm against a fence, the U.S.-Mexican border is some of the toughest terrain on the continent, trying to build a wall across the entire length would be an engineering nightmare and prohibitively expensive. Putting up a fence in areas that remote is useless. The problem is that the border is only 100 yards wide, easy to get across in a quick dash. A better idea would be to expand the border to about 50 miles wide, put in fences and obstacles as the terrain permits, patrol the area with aircraft and electronic surveillance, and anyone caught within it, coming or going, would be arrested. You can make a quick dash across 100 yards or so, but you're not going to sneak across 50 miles of desert.

I bet illegals will end up being the ones building the fence. Otherwise, the cost would be prohibitive.

Of course, considering the tunnels, sea routes and that most people know how to use wire cutters, I don't see the use.

I'm against. Walls never work and they're very expensive.

The only thing that will ever stop illegal immigration is when both sides of the border are equal. As long as the income disparity between the US and Mexico remains we will have illegal immigration.

I'm against it. The fence will destroy the natural ecosystem in the area and will not deter illegal immigration.......it's waste of money.

I'm against it,only because it will cost too much and be ineffective.Take the money and use it for shipping them back across the border and keeping them there by closing all border crossings and setting up infrared trip wires with full time monitoring.Also once they are here do not give them a thing to eat or drink,much less any health services.
