I am in favour of controlling immigrants to this country because we do not have enough resources to take care of our own subjects, let alone provide for the immigrant population.For example, why should our very elderly people who fought to make this country free, be living as third rate citizens on low incomes and have to rely on benefits and handouts because their pensions are inadequate. We are a poor nation now. Gordon Brown has sold our gold reserves, spent our pension investments and wants to give all the benefits to unmarried mothers who have chosen that path in life. And I would control immigrants in this way : coming into the country of their choice, they MUST adopt and accept the laws, customs, religion and culture that prevail. Anyone who subsequently tried to overturn anything...immediately deported !! Would other countries stand for a rebellious, militant group of British people bombing and murdering in their land?

Simple geography, take a look at a world atlas and see the size of the UK compared to all the other countries in the world, we are one of the smallest, you cant get a pint into a half pint pot.

we should concentrate on helping people to better the conditions in their own countries this is pure common sense not racism

Yes,the whole of the British welfare system is creaking due to the large ammount of immigration that there has been over the years,common sense must prevail over the vote catching tricks that politicians of all parties do to get the vote of immigrant families who have been naturalised and want to bring family mrmbers here from other countries.Nothing is ever said,or true figures released regarding illegal immigrants e.g. failed asylum seekers on the run,people who come from eastern european countries on holiday visas who don't go back,the Australians have the right idea regarding all immigration.A tight rein must be kept on the number that we accept.

The present governments attempts to limit migrants from Romania and Bulgaria from 1st jan could be regarded as racial dicrimination if other nationalities are not also limited.

yes as they are doing our jobs for less money and taking it home. the economy will collapse and your bills will grow.

yes, we have far too many immigrants as it is in my opinion.
Why should we cram our country full when it is fine as it is? Why allow often unskilled people in who can't benefit the UK who often cant even speak english? Society is diverse enough, so why should there be more and more eastern europeans, asians and whoever else wants to come? Its not good for our economy.

There can't be an open door no questions asked policy on immigration, why are some immigrants given houses in London that can cost Â£750,000 for one family? I'm glad to live in a multicultural multifaith UK, immigration has positive aspects but must be controlled.

Yes, and not because im a racist. We have our own homeless people who need the housing and jobs and benifits that are being taken by our visitors. The old saying, charity begins at home is spot on. You cant give refuge to non-brits until our folk have been helped. Yes, some cant be helped i know. But many need and deserve the countrys support before we throw away valuble resources on all these immigrants. There countries would never allow you to live off them, so why are we so desperate to offer them all we have, when our schools hospitals and social services are already streched to the absolute limit.

Also, and this point will be a little sensative, we know that in africa for instance, about 1 in 5 have hiv. That means if 100,000 come here, there "may" be 20000 cases for the nhs to deal with. Thats the nhs, which cant treat british patients because they cant aford the drugs. If you thought long enough, you could think of many more such reasons, so, i say, charity for brits, then the world after were sorted. Good question asked!!!

Yes there need to be tighter controls. But I would also like to say, you cant blame the immigrants for coming here. The ones that come into this country as a legal immigrant cannot get benefits, its the assylum seekers that get benefits and houses, and it was my impression (though I could be wrong) that anyone seeking assylum should seek it in the first safe country they come to, we are an island its not us, yes these people need help, but there are those that abuse it, and it is the government that is at fault.

This country needs a strong government that is not afraid to stick its fingers up to Europe. A government that will stop the british bone idol from making a life on the benefit system as a career move. There are more british draining the benefit system than anyone else, people who cant be bothered getting of their backsides to get a job, if its minimum wage so bloody what, get an education then you can. Why the hell should the rest off us pay taxes so they can live on the dole, and when it comes to pension time, they will get more money than those of us who worked because they are on income support, not a state pension, those of us who were wise enough have made provision for that though.

This country is seen as a soft touch, and the government has made us that, no wonder people want to come here, but it has to stop and the country put right now, but I have a feeling it will be too little to late.

they need controlling as they are getting out of hand, if they wish to enter our country the should be made to abide by our rules not making there own and getting away with it,we have rules so why are they so different

most of the foreign workers that i have employed are very lazy and there work is not up to our standards especially the polish
workers so I've got rid of them all and gone back to english workers and i now have got my company back on track again.

Most definitely! I have nothing against people from other countries at all there are good and bad in every country. Britain is so small and the housing system, school system and NHS is I believe at a very critical stage. In fact I believe in less than 10 years time the full cost of the impact of immigration will be too difficult to control. It will create huge tensions between all peoples! I believe we are living in times where human tensions will explode. What for greed!

Because at the lower level of the job market there are not enough jobs and the presence of all the immigrants means that native British people are suffering - finding it hard to find work or losing their jobs when they are contracted out to immigrants because its "cheaper".

Most employers would sooner employ - for example - a Polish mechanic who will work for Â£5 an hour than a trained British mechanic who wants his full Â£8-Â£9 an hour that he is entitled to. So guess who gets the job? And what happens to the trained British guy?

Well if he's anything like my BF he ends up doing a shite pub job on minimum wage and not being able to use his skills and qualifications. And we end up struggling to pay our mortgage on his low wage.

If you want to come here you should have to prove that you are filling a vacancy or bringing with you a skill that cannot be supplied/filled by THOSE ALREADY LIVING HERE - ie the employer should have previously advertised for the positon and had to reject candidates for not having the necessary skills/experience.

Otherwise, you no get in. No illegals, no people marrying to get a Visa, no coming here to work at MaccyD's. Its that simple.

The British government needs to look after their own people and let other countries look after theirs.

You can not control immigrants anywhere. International laws allow people the freedom of travel, work and live anywhere they wish.
British immigrated the various lands and then took them as their own changing the cultures totally.The world is becoming very small indeed and we can not stop it getting smaller.

I wanted to write to Dirty-Idea for his brilliant answer and thank him. I wish I had asked this question to give him 10 points. I am from Bulgaria and cannot explain how offensive the decision for "controlling" immigrants from Bulgaria and Romania feels! Now - I was not and do not plan to migrate to the UK, although I have friends there, could go and find a way to live as an illegal immigrant. If I had a chance to migrate legally - again, I would not. In fact, I have a friend, who brought her English husband to Bulgaria, because she prefers to be close to her family and friends. No, this is not why I am writing.
I am offended by hearing that my fellow country people are called "scum", "lining up to steal the British jobs". Well, jobs are not stolen - they are given to those who manage to prove they are fit for them. Do you honestly think it's so easy, especially for a foreigner?
Bulgaria and Romania are now discriminated against and punished for somebody else's miscalculations. On the other hand, the truth is the British labor market absorbed those immigrants because it badly needed them!
The latest mesures against the two soon-to-be EU member states will have the effect of boosting illegal immigration of low qualified workforce, who, naturally, will not be paying tax. Limiting immigration form BG and RO will bring to the UK only people who have no respect for the law anyway, as Bulgarians and Romanians will need no visas after 1 Jan.2007. Who will make the people who go to the UK to make a taxfree pound go home? Sadly, the UK is welcoming only the criminals - which, however, here are not more numerous than in your own country. Honest, hard working people will stay here or will contribute somewhere else.
This decision would not be considered offensive if it did not discriminate between citizens of the other Eastern European member states and Bulgaria/Romania.
Having said this, what do we do will all the Brits we have so far hospitably welcomed to our counrty with the only effect of rising the property prices for us locals...

Personally Id let them all in,anyone. My chosen profession depends on numbers of clients. And they`r`e all potential clients to me ! Open the gates . This countries shagged already so lets all make some dosh out of them and immigrate to Spain where we can all become immigrants !Special thanks to Mr. Blair for selling this country down the gurgler.And Sherie !!!
