Absolutely not. We have enough vehicular accidents as it is, and this is inviting more. In addition, will American truck drivers be the next group to see wage depression due to this? I think it will not be long.

First is the speed limit 80 MPH? If not then I am not comfortable with anyone going that fast. As for vehicles of questionable condition, well, I am not comfortable with anyone doing that either.

We got plenty of truckers from the deep south who barely speak English driving out there now,,,why compound the problem

Every day I check immigration news (just put 'immigration' in the news category of Yahoo browser) there are a number of stories about trucks and individuals smuggling people and drugs across our southern border. Institutionalizing a hole in our firewall, so to speak, seems to go in the opposite direction of what we need.

No I am not ok with it. What sort of drivers training do they have and what are the safety standards of their trucks.
In Euo rpe there are many trucks passing through different countries and I am sure most of the drivers don't speak the native language of the country they are entering(allthough many do speak the international language of English)
It doesn't matter here if they can speak the language because everyone has to go to intensive driving schools and have personal health checkups every couple of years.You can feel safe with the drivers here, I wish they cared enough about the people of the US to have more regulations with professional drivers.

They are not the only one that drives 80 MPH on the highways. I am not OK with anyone who drives dangerously.

Sooner or later they will kill somebody and then what?? Probably do nothing-pass it off as just another accident and there will be all kinds of excuses why it happened. Where are the highway patrol when you need one? That`s the way it is all the time-wait for the accident first instead of preventing it. Or maybe the dude will just kill himself and save someone else from him.

Not quite sure I understand the question. How does the language that one speaks affect someone's ability to drive? Does a truck driver that speaks english operate their truck any safer at 80 MPH than someone who doesn't?

As for trucks of questionable condition, who is making that determination? If the truck is crossing into the US from another country, then the truck and driver are inspected by US Department of Transportation and only allowed through if they meet DOT standards.

Considering that every truck and every driver crossing into the US are inspected, I would be much more worried about domestic trucks that are only periodically inspected.

I didn't realize English was a prerequisite for driving irresponsibly. The state of disrepair has nothing to do with language I would say.

I didn't know, that there are any USA highways in a condition, that allows a vehicle to drive past 50 miles an hour. I know, in Europe you can.

I would much prefer that they learn English before they drive at 80 mph. Because knowing English makes you handle a truck better, right?

I think the think from lsu tiger says it all. The Mexican trucks will be inspected every trip and the drivers will be required to understand and respond to certain questions, which will require that they understand at least enough English to follow road signs.

The only legitimate concern would be if they were going to depress wages for American truck drivers. Since they'll only be allowed to do routes between Mexico and the USA, and not between two cities in the USA, they'll only be allowed to do a very small fraction of truck driving in America, so I can't see how this would have any real effect on American jobs. All it does is to avoid the very wasteful step of unloading and reloading every truckload crossing the US-Mexican border and return us to the situation we had in 1982. I'm perhaps a little too young to remember back then, but does anyone know whether people being killed by out-of-control Mexican trucks was a big issue back then?
