It doesn't matter HOW it became apart of the U.S.A...that's irrelevant...you can't change the past.
However, just think what it would be like if the U.S. never took control of it. It would be the same as Mexico is now....crap! They'd still be trying to cross over illegally to get into the other states of the U.S.
So whether they like it or not...they need to just accept the fact that California belongs to the United States of America and it will always be that way. So just deal. |

We don't pay attention to people who lie, it was an official contract/treaty of purchase. Mexico owned the land for about 25 years, that is all. To say it was stolen when the documents prove otherwise really shows that Mexico has leaders of bad character, not men of honor who think in truth. |

1821 was the year Spain granted Mexico its independence.
1848 was the year Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and ended its claim to large portions of territory it lacked the wherewithal to control.
This is evidenced in the fact that Mexico was kicking the French out of Puebla in 1862 while the U.S. was engaged in its own Civil War.
From 1821 to 1848 is 27 years.
That is the period of time that the newly-formed Mexico laid claim to territory that is now part of the United States.
When the Mexican people declared independence from Spain, they AUTOMATICALLY laid claim to the entire territory that Spain had previously laid claim to.
But if Spain couldn't maintain control of this vast territory for itself, how could anyone expect the newly formed republic of Mexico to do it either?
Mexico was a new entity conceptually. It did not exist before Spain arrived in the New World.
The peoples throughout the territory that is now Mexico didn't even speak the same language and didn't have the same customs or culture.
It is an interesting irony that the two main things that united the people of current day Mexico was, 1) the uniformly oppressive treatment meted out by the Spanish and, 2) the uniformly useful language of these Spanish oppressors!
Otherwise, Mexico would have continued to be a territory inhabited by regional cultures speaking a range of different languages and having nothing to do with constituting or aspiring to anything resembling a republic or a nation-state.
When the New World was first being explored, the Pope gave everything north of the equator to Spain and everything south of the equator to Portugal.
As we can now see, claiming and getting are two different realities. |

I don't care about what happened back then, its past History...But the United States in 1846 declared war on Mexico, and during the course of that war American military forces SIEZED California, it didn't break away. The war was fueled in part by feelings of Manifest Destiny, a popular sentiment in the United States that viewed the expansion of the nation as an inevitability.
The arrival in Mexican California of John C. Frémont, a loose cannon, sparked a rebellion by Anglo-Americans in the province. Their uprising became known as the Bear Flag Revolt, although the image on their banner resembled more a pig than a bear.
Military forces from the United States soon landed along the coast and marched into the interior. The Californios fought well against the Americans, scoring a victory with their long lances at San Pascual. Ultimately, however, the Mexican forces were defeated in far larger engagements elsewhere. The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 and the cession of vast lands from Mexico to the United States. This treaty and transfer marked the end of Mexican sovereignty in California.
Sorry, it doesn't sound like they "broke away" to me, nor was it an independent state, it belonged to Mexico. |

The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo followed by the Gadsden Purchase...AFTER we kicked their butts in the Mexican-American war of 1846-1848
