when I become a permanent resident, am I eligible to get a Canadian passport? Only a permanent card is enough to "friendly" cross the US border?

You will only be eligible to get a Canadian passport when you are already a Canadian citizen. Being a permanent resident is jumping the gun quite a bit.
Canada and the US are border friendly countries so you will not need to apply for a visa to get in as long as you qualify with your papers, meaning you will have had a valid passport. Passports are required now a days. Things have changed a lot at the border, rules are more strict now.
Even if a visa is not needed however, a Canadian citizen is still considered a tourist of course and so cannot over stay longer than a tourist is required time to spend here otherwise, he can still be subject to sanctions and bans from the US government from over staying like any other tourist. |

No, Permanent Resident is not a Citizen yet. Therefore you don't get Canadian passport. Also, US Visa requirement is based on your citizen of passport. Canadian Permanent resident is not exempt from the US Visa requirement, unless your citizenship of passport of participating country of Visa Waiver Program.
Permanent residents (aka landed immigrants) of Canada must have a nonimmigrant visa unless the permanent resident is a national of a country that participates in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), meets the VWP requirements, and is seeking to enter the U.S. for 90 days or less under that program.

we have had the Canadian residency cards for the last year and a half but now I was told that i should do something to prove that I am here in Canada! I don't work and I am taking care of my kids whom are in school now while my husband work outside Canada to send us money , the question is what can I do to prove that I am here ?
isn't the home that we bought , mortgage , bills and receipts a prove enough that I am here? I have been out twice for a very short periods . My husband has to work outside Canada and he visits us when he can.
What should we do to guarantee that we get the passports after 5 years ?
