Aside of learning English what else do Hispanics?

i think that's pretty much it ...! because we are not going to neglect our heritage and culture lol
as long as we speak the language and are good citizens, that should be the "American way"

I'm Hispanic, I was born here, I don't speak Spanish at all, in fact I'm actually failing in my Spanish-class at school. I'm a Cardinals and Diamondbacks fan, I'm against illegal immigration, is that American enough for you?

All immigrants should learn the language of the country they immigrate to.

It doesn't matter if illegal criminal aliens learn the language or not, they must be deported.

P.S. I am native American as well. I was born here. So is Jazz.

- Came to the US through the proper legal channels
- Pledge their allegiance to our flag and country
- Learn the English language to a functional level

I don't think anyone would have a problem with them.

in order to fit in more with "mainstream America":

1. learn not just English but also American history, civics, be an involved citizen. I mean really involved, like in elections investigating the issues, not just voting for whoever ends in "Martinez"

2. branch out and socialize more with non-hispanics. It is a more exclusive and tight-knit community, more based on family ties (even in a big city you can go to a Mexican party and find half the people are related).

3. learn the law, including federal law, state law, city/county law, everything that applies to them! follow the law (get car insurance, don't drive drunk, pay taxes) at all times!

4. stress education and college for their kids, like Asian parents do. do not let them become teenage parents and a drain on society. also do NOT let their kids get involved in street gangs.

5. learn their legal rights and responsibilities, do not allow themselves to be taken advantage of by predatory lenders, or by scams or fraud targeting the Hispanic community.

as for anything else..well I disagree that there is one American "way of life". Maybe in Mayberry, Kansas but if you go to places like LA or chicago, you will see they are very diverse places. That is what makes America a great "melting pot" we are a nation of immigrants who all assimilated over time...and have made a richer culture because of it...

It doesn't matter if you asked anything about legal vs. illegal. They are two completely separate groups.

Illegal criminal aliens are not expect to assimilate to the way of life of the country they invade illegally, no matter which country it is. They deserve to be deported humanely. It's just that simple.

Legal immigrants ARE. Learning the language of their new country is but one way of assimilating. Being able to communicate with the citizens of the country is a good thing, wouldn't you think??

Another way of assimilating is adopting their new country as their own. Displaying pride in their new country is a good way of doing that. Contributing positively to their country, instead of being a burden, financially or otherwise. Obeying the laws and respecting their new country and its citizens. Defending their new country instead of criticizing it and its citizens.

Well, learning English is a great start. But they should also make an effort to learn about culture in the USA and embrace it. By learning English, they can get out of their enclaves and meet more Americans.

Then they can have both their culture and a new culture as well.

You may find this hard to belive, but Hispanics are not the problem, it is illegal immigrants. Racist people like you make me ill. The immigration debat is not a anti-hispanic movement, that you want to turn it into. This is a debat about the people(mostly from Mexico) that enter the U.S. illegally with the intent to lower our wages, close our hospitals, conjest our school systems, rape our children, and murder our neighbors.

Not only Hispanic's but all immigrants should learn the laws of our land and be contributing memebers of society. As far as the illegals go, anyone in our nation illegally should be deported. A criminal attitude doesn't change. Sorry! Without legal entry you are a criminal.

What Hispanics and any other person that want to come to the USA, have to come legally and not illegal. So the beside learning English, first, they all have to come legally. that is the first thing they all have to do and not the other way around.

If Hispanics were here in smaller numbers, they would integrate. But because they come in such large numbers, they congregate together and do not assimilate.

They protest in our streets, refuse to follow AMERICAN law, refuse to show respect to OUR country and OUR flag.
They move into neighborhoods and pretty much get them condemned because of the lack of respect they have for their home and neighbors. I have been a victim of this first hand!

become contibuting members of the American society.
quit putting their old country before their new one.
stop abusing goverment systems
stop having more kids than they can afford on their salary without help from the goverment
quit protesting(small minority) for the rights of their illegal friends
not request or allow spanish signs, billboards, paperwork to be allowed in America
quit self segregation

come on over to the house, with the rest of my non Native American friends and have a cook-out, bring the beer and tortilla chips and dip, my American friends can bring the steaks, 'burgers and veggies, my Euro friends can bring the brats.......you get the idea.

when the snow clears and I have a permanent assignment...you how us natives like to see our country ;)

I'm born and raised here so what are you saying? I can't eat Mexican food or listen to spanish music because that not American? Hispanics stick to their culture wether their born here or not. If you were Hispanic you will know why we love our culture so much, but this does not mean we're not proud Americans...I love this country..I just love my culture just as much.

I am MEXICAN, but an American Citizen for 51 years. I lived in Mexico for 3 weeks before I was brought here and I lived in Mexico for two years about 7 years ago. The differences are astonishing. First of all, I do believe that no matter what culture you are from you need to learn English. It is a more universal language. However, there need to be more places that provide ESL classes that are accessible. Two, other cultures so not need to asimilate into the American way of life. They need to be proud of who they are and where they come from. If you want them to be like Americans, then take a good look at most Americans life style. Always in a hurry, not very family oriented, racist, not community affiliated, to busy to care about others, not friendly, snobby, conceited, and that is just the tip of the iceberg of how I perceive an american stereotype.
I would suggest that any other culture would need to be sure that they get an education so they could get better jobs than the ones they do now; that they become legal and vote; that they learn to defend the rights they have; and that parents become stricter with their children so that they are not talking back and stepping all over their parents.
And to JAZZ - learn Spanish, nothing is more pathetic to me than a Mexican or any other culture that does not know his or her native tongue, culture, history, background and heritage.

Outside of just being a decent human being, unfortunately there's not much more one can do....the issue lies within "main stream" Americans...Many people believe their ancestors came over here, learned the English language without hesitation or in a timely manner and never caused any social problems...Neither is true...many who came over that didn't already speak English (which I will add is the native tongue not of this country but of England...many languages were spoken here prior to our pretentious ancestors who murdered figuratively and literally the heritage here before us and actually, French and Spanish were much more likely to have been spoken in this Country before English but I digress)...

The reality is it will take time for Americans to assimilate to others than for them to assimilate to us...

Go back to where they came from! In fact, we should all do that...everybody that has immigrated to this country (or even if your ancestors immigrated to this country) should go back the their "Homeland." Then, we can give the country back to the "Native-Americans."
