If people are in genuine need of asylum then any humanitarian society should allow them to stay....if however they are here for other reasons, like to escape justice in their own country, for example, then it's an obvious reason for deporting them back from whence they came....the difficultly with it all is how to enforce and police the whole system...in this ever-increasing globalising world..all societies and communities shoud be sharing information especially on criminal activity..that is the only way forward....
People need to be treated like human beings and not locked up in gated prison-like hostels...they are not guilt until proven innocent but it must feel like that for them.
Different cultures in any society just enrich the communtiy they live in...perhaps with a little bit of tolerance and understanding and without the media spin of moral panics....hopefully one day we should be able to live with both equality and diversity

This is based on my personal experience alone.

My fiancee' came here on asylum. They immolated his uncle (in Liberia) before he could get out of the country. The members of his family that came here on asylum have all worked to get green cards. They all (adults anyway) work and pay into the tax system. Most are citizens or working toward citizenship.

If asylum is sought for reasons like these, and people respect it like this, I am all for it.

difficult question, the first asylum seeker I knew, was from Iraq, he was 19 years old, he was tortured in Iraq, he was a charming and hard working lad. The second, came from africa, hiv positive, became a porter in the local hospital, dealing drugs at night in local night clubs, drugged and raped at least 6 young blond girls, infecting at least 2 with hiv. I think the problem with taking asylum seekers from so many different cultures, they have no understanding of our culture, bringing a great many new problems into this country.

If persecuted in their own country, they deserve refuge elsewhere, but England seems to get a disproportionate amount of them, it needs to be better regulated.

If economic migrants, here simply for a better life, then let them stay if they can benefit us or if there are jobs for them our own people will not do.

If coming over here to sponge from a generous country and spread hate, they can simply go home.

I'm married to one. He's an Iraqi kurd.

I would love some of these people who moan about them to go to these countries where asylum seekers are from and see how long they would last in the dreadful conditions.....I'm sure they'd soon be in tears, crying for their mummy!

jimquk
Whether they are "genuine" or are economic migrants, tey are human beings and should be treated reasonably. Anyone who is here should be allowed to work until Immigration actually remove them. People that have been here a while supporting themselves and making no problems should be allowed to stay. Access to benefits should be reduced both for newcomers and for natives.

Wiz
There are good and bad everywhere and each case should be judged on its merits....I think that when people are seeking asylum they should be kept in a safe place like an old hospital for eg when asylum status is granted only then should they be allowed into the wider community and allowed to seek work etc whilst they are in the holding centre English lessons should be mandatory

LadyMoonlight!!
Genuine Asylum Seekers I can sympathise with.

Those who pass through three or four "Safe " countries just to take advantage of our benefit system and any other "bogus" asylum seeker who is just coming here to get what they can out of the UK is unwelcome and deserves to be sent packing.

it depends on what people are seeking asylum from

many seem to be ecconomic asylum seekers - i say this because there were many who came to get away from saddam but now that he is gone are still here
the same with the political situation in iran twenty+ years ago

it seems when political situation changes and should therefore suit them and make it safe to return - they don't

I got here on asylum very young (3 years ago). I worked my *** off for the immigration officers to believe me and get my green card.

I think we as a country can not cater for any more Asylum seekers, but if I lived in a country where there was no money, no water, where my children could be raped and kidnapped, where my children faced a life of poverty, I would do my damest to escape that, and if that meant entering a county illegally or lying I would do it, I think we so easily forget just how lucky we are to have hot water/cars/places to live and schools and freedom of speech.

Why is it, When the camera's show people trying to get into the UK, they are always young males. Are these the only people who get persecuted? They never show middle age people, Why? When their own country are made safe, they still stay here, with a chip on their shoulder. At the moment we can afford to keep these people here, but what happens when a recession comes, will these asylum seekers be welcome then?

I need asylum from my X wife. She wont leave me alone.

Genuine asylum seekers would and are obliged to take refuge in the first "safe" country they arrive in. This begs the question why dont they? My belief is that whilst not ideal we treat them more humanely than many other countries and ultimately they wish to stay here and benefit from our increasing welfare system. We are the most lenient country in Europe on crime, we have the largest "social" housing system, we have a "free" healthcare system, we are well known for putting the needs of incomers in all their guises ahead of the indigenous population.Who wouldn't want to stay here? As stated in another respose, we must differentiate between asylum seekers and immigrants as they are two totally different things in as much as one is fleeing oppression/persecution and the other is seeking a better life. Add to this that many of our EU partners turn a blind eye to the human trafficking/smuggling that goes on. After all they would rather it was our problem than theirs.

Bo-cat
Most of the UK ones are now just chancers and spongers, bleeding the country dry, having babies so as to anchor themselves here.theyve crossed numerous countries to get here and take advantage of the copious welfare system.rest assured they are taking the pi ss and are allowed to do so by our sinister government.

the grimm reaper
asylum is overrated at 1 time it was ok for a few but we cant accept that any longer due to the vast amount of criminal illegal aliens here
we already must deport all illegals through attrition we can acomplish this.

Ummm my views are go back to your own country off you go, have the cheek to come here and bleed our country dry, and moan about it! Lets sort this country and our murderers out before we take in other countries problems. Have you noticed that most of the rapists and murderers on crimewatch are not english.
sorry you asked.

Geeza Sooka Yerlips
They should issue them all with sat-nav then they will easily find the asylums.

they should go to the nearest political stable country instead of travelling thousands of miles to get to the country where they can get the most benefits!
