Immigration has nothing to do with. American has been a land of immigrants since it's foundation. That's why one of our nicknames has been The Great Melting Pot.
The reason American is losing its identity is because people have stopped working together. They have polarized to the point where anyone who disagrees with them is the enemy.
And they have abandoned the core values that this country was founded by choosing to disrespect the Constitution.
It's that lack of unity, and that lack of tolerance, that has caused this country to fracture and fade. |

America is a melting pot, so it's hard to say if it had an identity to begin with.
though i do see what you are trying to ask. Mexicans and Cubans are coming and bringing a lot of their culture with them. Having so much of one culture can seem overbearing on the rest that exist within this land.
So in short, I say yes! The least they can do is learn english if they want to enter this country |

It is the illegal immigrants that are hurting the USA. |

How often have we heard the pro-illegal-alien crowd as well as other 'clueless' Americans repeat the mantra "after all we are a nation of immigrants, aren't we?" The answer to that question is a loud and incontrovertible, NO! Most Americans today are NATIVE BORN and therefore NOT IMMIGRANTS! What is left unsaid in the above phrase is the significant fact that our American ancestors came to this country as LEGAL immigrants, which is the antithesis of the current invasion of ILLEGAL ALIENS supported by the open borders, pro-illegal alien crowd! The mantra "a nation of immigrants" is an inaccurate 'branding' of our current American culture and society. It is an incantation that contains substantial disinformation, some subtle, some blatant, which never seems to receive any scrutiny or debate.
For most of us Americans, the essence of being an American does not include the use of a hyphen because we do not need the added 'security' of belonging, or having allegiance to, more than one place, country or ancestry. America is enough for us and we simply have no need for anything 'more.' We are proud to be Americans and are duly insulted when we are asked to incorporate a hyphenated attachment by dredging up our past ancestry, in order to append a nationality that would ultimately 'dilute' our esteemed title of 'American.'
It is most unfortunate that we Americans have been insidiously 'indoctrinated' and socially engineered by multi-cultural 'group think' techniques and pc (political castration) to accept the 'diversity dogma!' An insane devious 'educational' deception, enforced through 'sensitivity training' which demands that we embrace the tenets of diversity, a priori (up front)! For years, we have been coerced into adopting and applying the multi-cultural 'orthodoxy of diversity' everywhere and everyplace. Hyphenation is simply another manifestation of diversity that will rent asunder our unique American culture that has become a model for assimilation and acculturation by disparate peoples, admired and applauded around the world.
The question is, why have we Americans so stupefyingly accepted and followed such suggestions like hyphenation and the other propaganda of multiculturalism, when one considers that diversity is a dogma that requires us to promote and celebrate an American culture of non-assimilation and non-acculturation? One that encourages people who are dissimilar, unalike, and different from one another, to remain that way. A Machiavellian veneration that is the complete opposite of our world famous 'American melting pot,' a dynamic process that represents the coming together of diverse peoples who willingly assimilate and integrate into our unique, blended American culture!
Lastly, hyphenation raises the specter of nationalistic allegiance to a country OTHER THAN America. To most Americans that possibility is repugnant and traitorous. As for those of us who prefer to remain just 'plain' Americans, we do so because we know that we already possess the most valued status symbol in the world, that of being an American citizen, desired by many and consider to be the pinnacle of national identity! Actually we are quite 'smug' and proud about that fact. Why would we ever want to change and become something less? |

Yes. Alison is correct, but only on a very simple level. It was originally settled (with the exception of indians) by europeans seeking religious freedom. They brought a strong protestant work ethic, which helped build this county into the wealthiest and greatest in the history of the World.
The more recent immigrants are just economic refugees (for the most part, not all) trying to grab a piece of the pie, without helping in the capital creation process. They are therefore damaging the U.S. severely. |

Yes America is losing its "identity" as "Land of The Free", welcoming People of the World, Land Of Energy & Dignity, America today no longer loves everybody the way it used to, no longer seems to welcome everybody the way it used to, I mean what was the "Statue of Liberty" given to the USA for ? The World trade Centre Twin Towers, they were very symbolic of American energy, dignity creativity,Freedom, a beacon to the rest of the world that the USA was and is the country where every Man, Woman and child with dreams can come and create and live those dreams, yes it is losing that "identity" now. |

America was creating by immigrants so the "influx" is not what is changing our country. And we are still recognized as the "land of the free" but it would be nice if everyone here spoke english. |

If you're talking about legal immigrants, then no because most of the people in this country are descendants of legal immigrants. However, if you're talking about illegal immigrants then take that up with the people who are employing them, because employment is the reason they keep coming up here, so at least part of the problem can be solved by people in this country refusing to employ illegal immigrants. |

Except for Native Americans, we're all immigrants, or off springs of immigrants. It will lose it's identity, or what we've come to know as identity, with the influx of more immigrants, especially if we have to change our native tongue from English. And more especially if Bush has his way and we are combined with Mexico and Canada to be one big country, then we'll be Ameruo or some such. Watch out for that superhighway that is supposed to start in Mexico and go all the way to Canada!!!! |

First of all you must remember that America is the land of the free which is made up of all nationalities and this is why it's called land of the free.
We the people have earned that right. America is not losing it's identity, look at your government.
Don't be so blinded.
It might you one day on the other side. |

As everyone here has pointed out America was formed by immigrants sort of:
Let's not forget that America was formed by a group of Englishmen and their families who came to America to enjoy a wild and untamed land, to discover what these shores had to offer their homeland.
The country was formed by a constitution written by these same Englishmen when they grew weary of taxation without representation. This country gained it's freedom because these same Englishmen had the nerve to fight for this country with help from the French.
The huge difference in this country today- particularly when referring to our largest immigrant group ( who just happen to be here illegally) is that this group screams for representation yet avoids taxation.
America is not just a melting pot.The courage and determination that is found in the hearts of many Americans to this day is found in the blood that pumped through their ancestors veins- those same ancestors that fought to make America the land of the brave. |

Being that we have to "press 1 for English" everywhere, I think it would be a fair statement to say we have lost our identity. |

I think yes, however, many liberals will say no. That America is a "melting pot" and was built by immigrants. They seem to have accepted that New Mexico is no longer a state, but now a country.... |

I agree with those who pointed out that America is a nation of immigrants, and should never close its doors to others. Remember, even your dominant language (English), migrated to your shores, and has since been modified to reflect the diversity of your own culture. Strength lies in diversity, so embrace your differences! |

Things change, identities evolve. Borders aren't just porous, populations are transient. There can be no stopping of Mexican or other immigration to the US. The US is not just going through growing pains, but birthing pangs of a new era.
In fact, this could be the death throes of the old US. But we shouldn't fear; like the Phoenix of yore our country will rise up even stronger. Peoples ebb and flow, nations rise and fall. The Old Roman Empire gave way to Western Europe and our country itself. So, too, will the US give way to something stronger and better.
We need to figure out how to add the immigrants to our culture, even as we are added to theirs. We need to figure out how this will make us stronger, not worry about how it will weaken or hurt us. Embrace the change, brother, because the change will embrace you.

Please understand America was, and always will be a melting pot. Where are you from? Chances are from Europe, Africa, ect
The immigration debate stemmed from the president's office to distract the public from the war in Iraq.
Most of the "white" citizen's accessors were, as previously stated, immigrants. The only thing that changed was that when they arrived on Ellis Island, they were quarantined for a few days, and granted citizenship, whereas immigrants today have to wait upwards of twenty years.
America has no identity, unless you classify an identity as ignorance, racism, and a "lemming" type of following the masses (as in mass panic, like what the immigration debate came from).
With each citizen coming into America, a new page is written into the history of American history. It's a beautiful thing that should not be tampered with (unless you want to ease the rules a bit). |

What is or what was America's identity? The country was founded by immigrants, and it was this melting pot of different people that made it the land of the free. |

America's identity is that of a melting pot. Everybody here came from somewhere else if you go back a few generations (unless you are a Native American). So no, we aren't losing our identity. We will only lose our identity when people stop wanting to come here. |
