Becoming a US Citizen from Resident Alien Status...?

Can someone who is a Portuguese Citizen and has a US Permanent Resident Alien Card, who has lived her for over 20 years become a US Citizen if they:
1. Have had a restraining order against them
2. Have a criminal record for felony shoplifting, misdemeanor larceny, and was put on probation for 1 year, plus restitution

Unfortunately, someone I know with this past is trying to become a US citizen and I'm hoping that they will deny them because of their criminal behavior.
SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY, PLEASE!

It is highly likely that because of their criminal behavior that they can never become a citizen. I am surprised their green card was not revoked.

Maybe an immigration lawyer can help them but even that is iffy. Because when a person is a guest in another country they are supposed to behave.

Your best bet is to contact an immigration lawyer with these same questions. Many will answer over e-mail, some at no cost. Check with the nearest university for the best and most affordable citizenship and immigration lawyers. Because they have international students, they deal with similar questions quite often.
