Can I apply for U.S. citizenship with my parents?
Find answers to your legal question.

Can I apply for U.S. citizenship with my parents?

My parents don't speak English and decided we should apply for the citizenship together. But the problem is that I'm under 18 but I've been a U.S. resident for more than 5 years. So my question is can I apply for citizenship with my parents & take the test with them while I answer all the questions because they don't speak English?

Thank you for the help

if your parents are going to apply for citizenship, they need to know the basic english to do the oral and written tests. they cannot have you nor any translator present with them. the only exception is if they are over i believe 65 and have been a u.s. resident for I believe 15 years, then they can do the test in their native language.

anyway, they each do the testing separately, as they each fill out the N400 separately. tell your parents to attend the citizenship classes offered at your local library to learn u.s. history etc. if your parents pass now, you can become us citizens with them automatically, since you are currently a minor.

According to the law, applicants must demonstrate:
• “An understanding of the English language, including an ability to read, write, and speak...simple words and phrases...in ordinary usage in the English language....”
• “A knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of the history, and of the principles and form of government, of
the United States....”
This means that to be eligible for naturalization, you must be able to read, write, and speak basic English. You must also have a basic knowledge of U.S. history and government (also known as
“civics”).

For persons who acquired citizenship from parent(s) while under 18 years of age use the “Application for Certificate of Citizenship” (Form N-600) to document their citizenship. Qualified children who reside abroad use the “Application for Citizenship and Issuance of Certificate under Section 322” (Form N-600K) to document their naturalization. You may call the USCIS Forms Line at 1-800-870-3676 to request a Form N-400, N-600, or N-600K; or you may download all of these forms at www.uscis.gov.

Disability — If you have a physical or developmental disability or a mental impairment so severe that it prevents you from acquiring or demonstrating the required knowledge of English and civics, you may be eligible for an exception to these requirements. To request an exception, you must file a “Medical Certification for Disability Exceptions” (Form N-648). If you believe you qualify, contact a licensed
medical or osteopathic doctor or licensed clinical psychologist who will need to complete and sign your Form N-648.
To apply for a disability exception, your disability:
• Must be at least 1 year old (or be expected to last 1 year); and
• Must not have been caused by illegal drug use.
If you qualify for this exception, an interpreter, who is proficient in English and the language of your choice, must
accompany you to the interview.

therefore you can not help your parents in answering the questions.

No. You don't do anything. You will be included as a part of their applications.... no test, no interview, nothing for you.
