Can I come to the U.S. before my J1 visa expires, and stay here after it has expired?

If you leave and return while your visa is valid that should be fine. You need a valid DS2019 to return into the country, I think. It must be stamped on exit and re-entry, just let them know what you plan to do when at the airport. If you only have a few days left on your visa when you re-enter they may ask for proof that youre leaving again - perhaps a plane ticket or eticket receipt no?

Usually, you have up to 30 days after the expiry of your J1 visa to get out of the country, however I'm not sure if you can leave and then return in this period. You can apply for an extension on your visa and DS2019, maybe you could talk to the international advisor at your US school?

If the two year rule does not apply (i.e. you are allowed to enter the country in the 2 years after your visa has expired), depending on which country you're from, you may be able to visit the US without a visa for a certain amount of time. You should email/visit your closest embassy.

The expiration date of the visa is important only when it comes to applying for admission. If you come back to the U.S. on or before June 22nd, you can apply for admission as a J-1.

If you are coming back on or before the 22nd of June to participate in the J-1 program described on your DS-2019, then it's possible that you will be found to be admissible. If your participation in the program terminates when you leave in May, then you would not be returning in June to participate in the J-1 program, and the J-1 visa would not be valid for admission.

When the officers at the port-of-entry check with your program sponsor in June and verify that you are still engaged in the program, you could be permitted to enter until the end of June.

hi, im referring to the advice you provided about the two year rule, hoping you can help me out. does the two year period begin at the expirations of the J1 visa, or upon return to one's issuing country - how abuot if one is on holiday? does that time abroad not count to the 2 year rule being fulfilled?

Hi... I am a foreign exchange program student on a J-1 short term visa. I have been issued visa from 4th March to 3rd April. But my program at the university starts only on the 25th March and goes on till 3rd April. I also have plans of extending my stay for another week or so... Can i do that ? Will the 30 day grace period be applicable? Or should i leave US on 3rd April at any cost ???

Please my J-1 visa and I-94 did not expired but I overstayed the date on my ds -2019.J-1 visa was for a year.I was refused visa on three occupations .The consular officer says I have overstayed my authorized dates.Please this advice me what to do in othe to correct those abnormally in the system .

Hi I am planning to visit USA for 75-90 days for research collaboration this summer (7th May or so). If I take a J1 visa, would I be able to enter USA again in the next year? I am anticipating yearly visit in future. Or would I be stuck for the 2-year home rule and that waiver stuff? Thanks for your cooperation.

my J 1 visa expires by 1 june,11 but I got waiver of it and shall go and do a short course for one year and change to H1B visa i am a math teacher worked here for 3 yrs and one my friend is asking me to come to the state where he is living and asking me to do the short course for one yr, and my question is that j1 visa expires june 1,2011 and have waiver and can I fly from one state to another after june 1,2011 and then get a admission for one yr course is it legal ? advice and guide me

hey my visa expires on June 30th' 2011, DS2019 extended till march 2012, i m scared if i go back to my country in India in Oct 2011', they will not permit me to come back as i overstayed my visa.. is it?? I m in states on my status with multiple enteries on my Visa also subjected to 2 year home residency
