Can I keep my US citizenship, if I get Uruguayan Citizenship?

I am an American by birth. I want to teach English in Uruguay. I want this to be a long-term job. I must have citizenship to work in a country without a Visa. I still want to be an American, though.

Yes, you can keep your US citizenship as far as the US is concerned, assuming you can become a Uruguayan citizen. these days about the only way to lose your citizenship is to renounce it at a US embassy overseas. The US doesn't recognize dual citizenship, but does nothing about it. you just have to use your US passport to leave and enter the US. The US doesn't force foreign nationals to renounce their original citizenship when becoming American citizens either. There are many things on the books that could in theory cause you to lose your citizenship, but various court cases up to the Supreme Court make it all but impossible to actually lose your citizenship.

Unless you renounce US Citizenship, you will be forever US Citizen. You still have to file US Income Tax even if you become Uruguayan citizen.

According to Section 349 of the Immigration and Nationality Act
naturalization in a foreign country will result in loss of your US
citizenship.
