im a US immigrant/greencard holder but not yet a US citizen, i really want to start my own family, can i marry a girlfriend who's in US on a tourist visa? how do i go about it?

getting married is easy. keeping her here is hard. if you married today and filed a petition for her tomorrow, it would take another 5 years before that petition became valid and could be used. until then, either she would have to find some other status to remain here legally, or she would become illegal and that would make life a lot more complicated for you. If you become a US citizen while you wait, that petition would be upgraded to an IR-1 petition and would be immediately valid for use, although it still takes a while to process. If this happens, you'll need to inform USCIS about your citizenship, because they won't go looking for her petition if you don't. |

Start by getting a marriage license at the courthouse. You can marry whomever you'd like. |

I don't think she will ever be able to adjust her status if you do this. There are different rules for LPR's and USC's in regards to being able to sponsor someone. You need to look into this BEFORE you get married, as you may end up in a situation where she cannot adjust at all. You can marry her, but that doesn't make her legal here, or necessarily eligible to adjust. |

Yes, you can marry whoever you want. Just go to a city hall and buy a marriage license. But if you want your wife-to-be to stay legally in the US, she has to maintain her legal status on her own until you have a US citizenship, only US citizens' spouses can adjust their statuses without leaving the country. |
