Can a nexus card take the place of a passport?

my mom and I are going to Maine( by car) and we each need a passport they are pricey , a nexus card is cheaper are they the same ?

They are not the same. A NEXUS card is for travel between the US and Canada. You will still need a passport if you wish to go to Europe, etc.
For this one trip by car it will work but it is only valid in certain airports and seaports. It may be cheaper but if in the next 10 years you wish to go elsewhere you will need a passport.
NOTE: I am assuming you are Canadian. If you are a US citizen you don't need a passport to go to Maine and can not get a passport card (Only the US has passport cards).

Get a Passport Card. They're much cheaper, and perfectly acceptable for crossing the border by car.
